Annette Pugh

View Biography
Birmingham based artist Annette Pugh uses a diverse range of media to investigate the point at which, and how, a photograph becomes more than just a copy. She sources imagery from a range of archives and often references subjects and locations which are at once both familiar and yet anonymous. Drawing upon the lives and aspirations of the working classes, Annette creates new narratives, imbuing original photographic sources with a powerful sense of place.

Annette writes, 'I seek to engage with lost identities and uncertain moments, drawing upon a notion of collective memories, of watching and being watched'.

Over the course of her career Annette Pugh has exhibited extensively, published articles and received various grants and funding for the development of her own practice and teaching initiatives. Her work has been purchased for public spaces and private collections and she has been awarded an MA in Fine Art and an MA in Art and Design Histories. She is also a council member for the RBSA.

Most recently, Annette has been a prize winner in the Coventry Drawing Show, curated an Arts Council funded exhibition of emerging artists and exhibited at the RWA in Bristol. She has also completed a series of University residencies, placing a focus on printmaking and photography and the significance of their impact upon her painting. Alongside her studio work, Annette has been involved in a series of site specific photographic installations.  Her solo show, 'Somewhere Never Travelled', was hosted at Reuben Colley Fine Art in 2017.
