Henri Matisse

View Biography
Matisse emerged from the exciting melting pot of early 20th-century Paris.  In 1905, he and his collaborators were dubbed ‘fauves’ or ‘wild animals’ for their unorthodox use of colour.  Matisse subsequently became one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, enjoying a lifelong friendly rivalry with Pablo Picasso. In the course of his long career, Matisse worked in a wide variety of media including painting, sculpture, ceramics, print-making, stained glass design and paper cutouts.
