James Birkin

View Biography

Born in 1991 in Coventry, James Birkin has lived and studied in the city all his life. After completing a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Coventry University, he completed a BA in Fine Art at the same institution. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in Coventry and London. James has exhibited in New Art West Midlands, the Coventry Open and LAUNCH at Bishop Gallery in Coventry. Birkin has always been fascinated by the wealth of imagery that can be drawn from the urban environment. His paintings capture different aspects of the city, whether it be a row of closed down shops or the interior of a derelict building awaiting demolition. Birkin aims to map and record these images in a different way from a photograph. Being an avid urban explorer, he visits derelict buildings, photographing their crumbling interiors and exteriors and using the references to construct his paintings. His influences are Neo-Romantic second world war artists such as John Piper, who recorded dozens of monuments and landscapes. Other influences include George Shaw and John Monks.
