Danny Howes captures daily life in Birmingham's wholesale market

Danny Howes captures daily life in Birmingham's wholesale market
A major new collection by Danny Howes, 'The Wholesale Market', opens on 5th September. Birmingham wholesale market is approaching the end of an era.  After more than 40 years in Pershore Street, the market is set to move to a purpose-built facility in Witton.  The current site may be down-at-heel, but markets are all about people.  Danny Howes captures the traders and their customers at work and at rest, haggling over a deal, queuing for a sandwich in the café or sharing a joke among the boxes of vegetables.

The physical structures of the wholesale market will soon cease to exist, and the trading community faces massive change.  These paintings celebrate the strength of that community, and the workplace in which relationships have been forged and deals done over the last four decades.
